A. R. McClelan was born in Riverside. At age twenty-three he entered politics and was elected to represent Albert County in the New Brunswick House of Assembly. He was a keen supporter of Confederation, and after Confederation in 1867 he became a Senator. From 1896 to 1902, he was Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick. In 1898 he was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law from Mount Allison University, and in 1900 he received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of New Brunswick.HM Number | HM20NE |
