Jan. 4, 1830 - Jan. 30, 1917

—M.P.P. 1854-1867 · Senator 1867-1896 · Lieut. Governor 1896-1902 —

A. R. McClelan was born in Riverside. At age twenty-three he entered politics and was elected to represent Albert County in the New Brunswick House of Assembly. He was a keen supporter of Confederation, and after Confederation in 1867 he became a Senator. From 1896 to 1902, he was Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick. In 1898 he was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law from Mount Allison University, and in 1900 he received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of New Brunswick.
Mr. McClelan and his wife lived in Victoria Manor, a beautiful house on Maple Street, which can be seen from here. It is three stories high, has twenty-two rooms and six fireplaces. In a front bay window there is a stained glass picture of Queen Victoria.
During his impressive political career, he was also a
merchant, farmer and lumberman. He was always concerned about the people of this area, and contributed money towards the construction of the Riverside Consolidated School, and the McClelan Memorial Hospital, which was erected at this site.
Buried in Hopewell Hill Cemetery.
